As we saw 2 weeks ago in Question 4, we can find the answer to that nagging question of Why am I here? What’s my purpose? If you miss your ultimate purpose in life, you’ll wander through life with questions, doubts, anxieties, aimlessness and stress. But God didn’t leave you in the dark! He told you what your purpose is! You were created by God to glorify him. When you embrace that purpose, you’ll live your life with greater joy, hope, peace and a sense of meaning.

So how do we glorify God? This is a tricky question because we have to know what we mean by glorify. There is nothing that we can do to add glory to God. We don’t magnify his glory in any way. However, we can lift up and enjoy and point others to the infinite glory that is already present in God. The idea of a telescope was helpful to me. It takes something that is seemingly small to the naked eye and brings it closer to the size that it really is. When I stare at the night’s sky and look at Jupiter drifting by, it appears to be just another speck of light, but when a high powered telescope sets its focus on Jupiter it communicates more about the reality of its beauty and grandeur.

There is no more glorious and awesome being in all the universe than our Creator God. The more we know of him, the more we will enjoy him, worship him and glorify him. The more we get to know his everlasting love, his great faithfulness, and his matchless wisdom, the more we will love him, trust him, and obey him. And through all this, we glorify him. Not by bringing glory to him, but by seeing and savoring the glory that is infinitely present in him. And as we behold his glory, we fulfill our ultimate purpose in life.

Prayer:

Gracious Lord, we want to fully know and enjoy you. Open our eyes to see you as you are that we might trust you and long with all we are to keep your commands. Whether through small kindnesses or great courage, may each act of obedience further reveal your glory to me and to a watching world. Amen.
