Divided Nation

Today’s reading will be from “Church History in Plain Language” by Bruce L. Shelley pages 476-481. You can download it by clicking on this link or read it right here within the site. After reading, please leave a comment below.

What do you think about the individual nature of Church? Should it be a place where I can go to have an individual encounter with God or a place for collective worship, fellowship, and encouragement? What are some of the dangers of megachurches?

  1. I think the church is both. You can go there privately to be with God on your own, or you can go to worship with others and get encouragement. I think a danger with mega churches is that they are trying to please a bigger crowd and focusing less on what they are actually teaching and how they are pleasing God instead of pleasing people more.

    1. ya. i’ve been to mega churches and the who feel there is to have fun and when the pastor preach they twist the gospel into what the people want to hear.

      1. yes but putting a twist on the gospel could take it away from its original purpose and lead people astray, i’m not saying that its a bad idea but you should do it carefully.(putting a twist on gospel that is) i feel like we should have a community of people in a church but not so much that it becomes the priority to be the biggest church.

  2. To me church is both because you can go to talk to god by yourself or u can go there to be with other and they can give you advice about God

  3. I also believe it to be both. I think that it is good to pray to God alone and to talk to him by yourself. It is also good to have your Christian brothers and sisters help you in your move towards Christ and be there to support you. I think that Megachurches try to appeal to the people and they don’t focus on God, but mainly on what the crowds want to hear.

  4. I think both. And also, you could go and be surrounded by people and feel completely alone with God. Some problems of megachurches is that they have so many people, they focus on what the people want, not what they need to hear. And also, not that this is a problem, but they always have so much new stuff that really isn’t necessary. They ask other people for money to go on missions, but if they didn’t buy all that stuff, they could probably fund it themselves.

  5. Churches are mostly about fellowship and worship, but most have rooms where you can be by yourself. Megachurches try to please people more than actually bring them to God.

  6. I think that churches could be for both purposes: go alone or with others. I think that if you go alone you can have some private time alone with God, but if you go to church with others, you can get different views and advices about God. I have never been to a megachurch before, but the style of preaching really depends on the pastor. I’ve noticed that some pastors try to make the sermons fun and exciting, but they don’t focus on God much more than other stuff they think relates to their message. Really, I think it’s okay to make God sound fun and exciting, but not in the way that makes their sermons more about real-life stories than God.
