  1. Before I started reading this I knew nothing about Rome and how they went into war a lot and the had a lot of emperors and some of them were good and some were rude and bad.

  2. I found it interesting that one side of the empire fell and yet the other side continued thriving. The Germanic tribes sure did learn a lot about the Romans from living side by side with them for so long. The Huns were scary (and now the song “Make a man out of you” is playing in my head). There were a lot of tribes that lived around the Romans: the Goths, the Visigoths, the Huns, the Vandals, etc.

  3. rome did have some allies in gaul who they called for when they heard the huns were coming. even though rome was sacked. they were still the seat over government. rome officaly fell in 476 AD.

  4. yeah they had so much going on, they had to deal with an east and a west empire, all the time it took to defend these plus so many tribes all around them. basically one slip-up and they had thousands of angry barbarians waiting to attack, so it was bound to happen

  5. I like the Gauls way better than the Romans. When the Romans went into battle with the Gauls, the Gauls killed the emperor Valens. Alaric was buried in a river and then the person who buried him was killed so that no one new where the grave was.

  6. When the Huns came and attacked the Visigoths, who were friendly allies of Rome, they asked of they could cross the Danube and Rome said yes. However, when the arrived the Romans treated them horribly and so they became enemies instead. Theodosius was able to make peace with them once again.

  7. So . . . . I didn’t know that when Alaric died his tomb-carvers were slain. I also am glad that Alaric spared the churches. Was Odoacer a Roman? I don’t really remember the book saying he was.

  8. the huns attacked the visagoths when they were friendly. romans went to battle with the guals alot. they had a lot going on becuae of the split

  9. The Germanic tribes fought naked! And, they would much rather eat or sleep than do any work. I could be one of them. I would not want to be known as, “Lover of Peace and Gauls.” Rome has been out of power for a long time now, but the world would be much different it was still powerful.

  10. germanic sounds alot like german are they the same thing or something, also its crazy that for 500 years rome was able to keep their frontiers safe, also barbaric people i dont think would have a government and rules, i thought they did whatever they wanted to.
