I’ve never heard of A.D I learned about BC and BCE but not AD I found out that it means anno domini
It actually does mean “Before Common Era” The CE and BCE is a way to remove religious references from secular textbooks since AD means “In the year of our Lord” and BC stands for “Before Christ.”
The old religion of Rome was fading. Stoicism was spreading and new religions were coming in from Egypt, Persia, and Asia. Christians were mainly persecuted on political grounds not religious.
The Romans had a more serious way of following religion. They were more strict. When they conquered lands, they would sometimes adopt the religion. I learned that the intolerance of Christianity was more about politics than religion.
Roman religion was very formal and had little to do with spirit of man. The Romans were inseparable from patriotism and had a firm belief of the gods and their powers. Soon the Greeks and Egyptians brought in mythologies that confused and excited the Romans. After Augustus, though, men didn’t believe in the “old gods” anymore. Zeno, who was a stranger from the East, introduced Stoicism to Athens; this was because he taught his new theology from a porch called a stoa. Two of the greatest Stoic philosophers were Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus. Marcus Aurelius is sometimes known as the Stoic Saint. Epictetus believed that the light of his small lamp would guide others to wisdom, do the Romans paid large amounts of money for this, even though the Senate thought that he was bad news. Epicurus’s philosophy made the principle of virtue found in happiness known, and did not believe in self discipline, causing people to be wary of him.
the old roman religion was decaying. the 2 greatest stotic pholosiphers were epictetus and marcus aurallis. most of mithraisms popularity disapated when promised imortality didnt come
The old roman religion taught them respect, self-restraint, discipline, and virtues, however this was decaying. Stoicism came, but it was not for a whole empire, only for individuals. Then they started worshiping other gods from other places.
the opening of the east brought new thing to rome. there 2 kinds of questioning the big mind and questioning the small mind. augustus tried to bring about the return to the religion of Numa but it was an outward return only.
there were many great aspects that the romans brought to the world. At this point tho the old Roman religion was slowly fading away. christianity was rising in popularity
