Important to Know:
The Orthodox Church in the United States is relatively small in comparison with other religious groups perhaps numbering in the range of one million adherents. Like other religious groups, the Orthodox Church was brought to the United States by immigration, especially from Russia (particularly after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917), Greece, and some Arabic countries.
i did not know that russia had missionaries.
AHA!!! I knew Philiokalia had something to do with love! I mean it has ‘philio’ in it and ‘philio’ and ‘philia’ mean love. That is where we get Philadelphia. (the city of brotherly love).
What did love have to do with christian texts?
If you want to learn more about the Philokalia, this is a great Orthodox resource that answers the question of What it is, who compiled it, and why. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaH-GyuIDAg

I learned that Innocent was married and then his wife died and he became a monk. He also translated the Bible into Unagan.
where did people get the word monk from
It has it’s origins in Greek. Monastery comes from the Greek “monazein” which means to live alone. and Monk comes from the Greek Monachos meaning “solitary.”
